BIOGRAPHY:

R. Kenneth “Ken” Derick, M.S., P.E., is a regional manager for Universal Engineering Sciences, Inc. (Universal). He is responsible for the performance of Universal’s Orlando and Leesburg branch offices. Ken is a senior vice president with Universal and has been with the company since 1991. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1975, and a Master of Science degree in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1977, with emphasis on geotechnical and structural engineering. Ken is a licensed professional engineer in the states of Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia, and Puerto Rico.

Ken was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and has two children, a son Ken Jr., and a daughter, April, and one granddaughter, Faedra. Ken loves traveling, fishing, golf, and following his “home teams,” the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He currently resides in Orlando, Florida, and has been a “float rider” at Mardis Gras in Mobile, Alabama since 1985. Ken has been a member of Rotary since 1984, and also participates in numerous professional organizations. He has served as a past president of the Southwest Orlando Rotary Club, past president of the Lake Charles, Louisiana, Chapter of the Consulting Engineers Council of Louisiana, and served on the board of Governors of the Georgia Consulting Engineers Council from 1988 to 1991.

BIOGRAPHY:

Fred J. Schmalzer, P.E., S.I. is Vice President of Construction Services for Universal Engineering Sciences, Inc. (Universal). He has been with Universal since 1989. Fred graduated from Michigan Technological University and received his BSCE in 1981. He is a licensed Special (Threshold) Inspector and has received numerous certifications related to building and roadway construction. Fred’s career path began as a project engineer building bridges in the state of Florida working for a general contractor. His professional career with Universal has taken him from serving as Department Manager for the Construction Services Department to Vice President of Construction Services.

Fred was born in Muskegon, Michigan, and is the proud father of twins Hillary and Mitchell. He has raised English Labrador Retrievers for the last 18 years and also owns and cherishes two Maltese dogs. Fred enjoys participating in his children’s activities, golfing on the beautiful golf courses in Florida, attending sporting events, and is an avid Michigan Wolverines fan. In his free time, he enjoys honing his golf skills.

BIOGRAPHY:

Phil Sutherland serves as Manager of our Building Inspection department. He has resided in Florida, for more than 30 years. He has also lived in Ohio, West Virginia, Georgia, and Connecticut.

After 20 years of government service regulating building construction (seven with the regulatory agency responsible for safety at the Walt Disney World Resort) Phil became a leader in the privatization of these services, as provided by the Florida Legislature.

Phil is certified by the International Code Council (ICC) as “Master Code Professional.” He serves on the electrical advisory council to Underwriters Laboratories (UL). He’s also an active member of two Standards Technical Panels, responsible for National Safety Standards (ANSI/UL 1998 Standard for Safety for Software in Programmable Components, and ANSI/UL 1008 Standard for Safety for Transfer Switch Equipment). Phil has been an active member of the Building Officials Association of Florida (BOAF) for more than twenty years. He also maintains active membership in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI), and International Code Council (ICC).

Phil and his best friend Carrie have been married for 26 years. Carrie serves as a Legal Assistant for the United States, Department of Justice. Together they have a 25 year old son, Mike, who graduated from high school at age 14, and received his computer programming certificate from Valencia Community College at age 18. Mike resides in Connecticut where he works as a software engineer for a national firm. He recently married, and plans to reestablish residence in Japan.

In their leisure time, the Sutherland family enjoys traveling to Europe, camping, hiking, kayaking and whitewater rafting down the Chattanooga River in North Carolina. Phil and his wife also enjoy dining at Orlando’s fine restaurants and visiting with friends.

BIOGRAPHY:

Brittany O’Sullivan is a Business Development Representative for the Orlando Branch office of Universal Engineering Sciences; handling Orange County and Seminole County. Brittany joined the Universal Engineering Sciences family in 1999 after graduating from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Business Administration and working in the marketing department for a large contractor. She is involved in a number of organizations such as, the Central Florida Chapter of the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC), the Florida Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA), National Association of Industrial and Office Professionals (NAIOP), Greater Florida Chapter of The Associated General Contractors of America (AGCGF), and more.

Originally from South Carolina, Brittany also lived in The Woodlands, Texas before moving to Florida in 1993. She and her biologist husband live in the charming city of Winter Garden with their daughter and three dogs. After supporting their daughter at dance, soccer, piano and drama, they spend time together riding bikes, shopping, and visiting to the beach.

Carl Vandiver is a Texas native. He moved to Winter Park, Florida, in 1995 to attend graduate school at Rollins College and, after fishing from a kayak on the Indian River Lagoon during sunrise, fell in love with the area. Carl has a background in banking, real estate development, and real estate brokerage and is knowledgeable about Universal’s construction and materials testing services. Carl is active with the Metro Orlando Home Builders Association (2010 Developer’s Council Chair), National Association of Industrial and Office Professionals (NAIOP), International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), is close to finishing his Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation, and has been a supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters (eight-year volunteer) and Valencia Community College. Carl and his dog, Maggie, live in Winter Park. He can be relied on for excellent restaurant recommendations, to debate passionately about college football, and to gather good people together for sporting clays or river trips.

BIOGRAPHY:

Jim Sargeant was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and was reared in Toms River, New Jersey (by the Jersey Shore). He moved to Lakeland, Florida in 1977. Jim graduated from Polk Community College and the University of Central Florida (UCF). Go Knights! He also was a fraternity brother of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at UCF. While attending college, Jim was employed at Walt Disney World for six years. He was “King Leo” and a toy soldier in the original Main Street electrical parade, and also the worked on the Jungle Cruise as “Jungle Jim.” During his last two years at Disney, Jim was a lead of the bus operation and met his wife (Therese) who came down to Florida for the summer from Chicago to participate in the Disney college program. They have been married for 23 years and have a daughter, Stephanie, who recently became 18 years old.

Being from New Jersey, Jim is a big New York fan. The New York Jets won Super Bowl III on his birthday and haven’t been “cursed” since, so says Jim. The same goes for the New York Knicks, the Rangers, and the Mets. He is also a big Boston Red Sox fan who finally enjoyed seeing them win the World Series. Jim also follows the UCF Knights and the Florida Gators. Jim enjoys playing golf, and considers himself a weekend “warrior.” He also works out to keep in shape. Jim is a long-term board member of his Homeowners Association.

Jim has been employed by Universal Engineering Sciences, Inc. (Universal) since 2006, but has been in sales for over 15 years. His main focus at Universal is on cultivating national retail accounts such as McDonald’s, Racetrac, Burger King, Target, and Kohl’s. Jim is continually working on adding to this list.
